25 Frequently Asked Questions
About Chiropractic
What is Chiropractic Care?
Chiropractic care is a natural method of health care that focuses on treating the cause of physical problems rather then managing symptoms. The main way this is achieved is by correcting spinal misalignments and therefore improving the nervous system. When there is disfunction in the nervous system, that can cause pain, stiffness and many other health ailments. However, Doctors of Chiropractic are well versed on many areas of health care. In addition to chiropractic treatment, many chiropractors address their patient’s health concerns with nutrition and lifestyle changes, address ergonomic and muscle imbalances in the body and many more therapies.
What conditions do chiropractors treat?
Doctors of Chiropractic (DC) treat patients of all ages for many different health conditions. Chiropractic is best known for its natural and effective treatment of back pain, neck pain and headaches through chiropractic adjustments. Furthermore, chiropractors treat a wide variety of injuries to the muscular skeletal system including the muscles, joints, and ligaments. Many chiropractors coach their patients on nutrition, supplementation, exercise and other healthy habits as well.
Is chiropractic care appropriate for children?
Yes! At Tobin Family Chiropractic we love treating children. Some parents actually bring their babies in for their first adjustment shortly after birth. Chiropractic adjustments for babies and children look much different then adjustments for adults. Light pressure at particular areas of the spine is used to make corrections in the spine. As children get older, other light techniques can be used. Having children adjusted early can be of great benefit to their health. Children are very active and may suffer falls or other blows that can misalign their spine. These misaligns may or may not cause pain, either way they are important to correct so that they do not cause more problems down the road.
Does insurance cover chiropractic care?
In most cases insurance plans will have some sort of chiropractic coverage. Each insurance plan is different and benefits need to be confirmed for each individual plan. At Tobin Family Chiropractic we are in network with most major insurance companies including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, UHC, Medicare and more. Some military veterans may also receive coverage through the VA. When you set up an appointment at our office we will take your insurance information in order to check benefits before your first visit.
Do I need a referral from my primary care doctor?
A referral from your MD is usually not necessary in order to visit a doctor of chiropractic. However, some health care plans may still require a referral. You can check with your insurance carrier to see if your plan requires referral. Most plans allow you to just call and schedule an appointment with a chiropractor.
